What Is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane, removing up to 99% of dissolved contaminants including PFAS, lead, arsenic, nitrates, fluoride, and dissolved solids. RO produces the purest drinking water available from any residential treatment technology and is recommended by the EPA for homes with elevated PFAS levels.

RO System Options

Under-sink RO systems provide purified drinking water at your kitchen faucet with 5–7 stage filtration from $400 installed. Countertop RO offers portable purification without plumbing modifications. Whole house RO treats all water entering the home for $4,000–$25,000, ideal for well water or extreme contamination. WaterLux also installs tankless RO systems from $600 that provide continuous flow without a storage tank.

Stage Comparison

A 5-stage RO system includes sediment pre-filter, carbon block, RO membrane, post-carbon, and polishing filter. A 7-stage adds remineralization and UV sterilization. For South Florida, we recommend at least 5 stages for city water and 7 stages for well water to address the full spectrum of local contaminants including PFAS, chloramines, and elevated TDS.

Reverse Osmosis Installation Questions

How much does reverse osmosis installation cost in South Florida?
Under-sink RO systems cost $400 to $1,400 installed in South Florida. Whole house RO systems range from $4,000 to $25,000 depending on capacity and stages. WaterLux includes professional installation, dedicated faucet, and a 5-year warranty.
Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS from South Florida water?
Yes. Reverse osmosis removes up to 99% of PFAS from drinking water and is the EPA-recommended technology for areas with elevated PFAS levels including parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties.
How often do RO filters need replacement in South Florida?
RO membranes last 3–5 years. Pre-filters and post-filters need replacement every 6–12 months. South Florida's higher sediment and chloramine levels mean filters may need more frequent changes. WaterLux offers maintenance plans from $100 per year.
Is whole house RO worth it in South Florida?
Whole house RO makes sense for well water with extreme contamination or for homeowners wanting purified water at every tap. For most city water homes, an under-sink RO for drinking plus whole house filtration is more cost-effective.
